DVD Review " THE ORPHANAGE" (EL ORFANATO)" Score A-
Although film had a mainstream release it is none the less a foreign film as this is a Spanish made film (with English subtitles) and its one of the more brilliant ones from Spanish film makers in the past few years. Guillimo Del Torro (of the superb Pan's Labryinth and Hell Boy 1 and 2) produces this and I am sure that after he read this smart script he wanted to be involved. Although billed as a horror film this one nicely omits the overkill of gore that most modern films in this genre think they need to supply. It is actually more of a mystery with elements of psychological terror and desperation thrown in. As long as you pay attention to the film it will leave you thinking about it for a while when it ends. As viewers we are left with all the clues and explanations but aren't spoon fed them and the film makers respect us enough to know that we are as smart as the script is and we can figure it out in the way they laid it out for us. After seeing the movie and pondering on this for a bit you will come to those "Oh yea" moments where the whole thing makes sense to you. The supernatural parts are there, and the reality parts are there for us to piece together. I really liked this and give points to the director for crafting a really decent well made film. Check this one out for sure.
DVD Review "AMERICAN PIE 6: Beta House" Score D+
This dumb watered down sequel to the American Pie franchise is like a piece of wet toilet paper loosely holding the film together. The script is nothing more than a rehash of "Revenge of the Nerds" except this time the Beta House frat is the underdog and the nerds are the Rich popular house.... know as Geek House (The writers clearly couldn't be bothered with using actual Greek letters to come up with a house fraternity name for them). Of course this comes down to the two houses betting their charters and dwellings on the winner of some made up Greek contest that was banned 40 years ago. Eugene Levy who is a nerd but somehow is the coolest alum from the Beta House and past winner of the contest officiates over the games in an effort to capitalize on the fact that this is American Pie sequel and not just a Cinemax ripoff of the series name. The contest game are ridiculous and reference scenes from movies that most viewers of a film like this won't even get, again lowest common denominator rip off writing by a hack. Skip this unless you are simply a horny 13 year old boy. I threw this one in the DVD player because it happened to be in my roomates collection, it was a mistake and a waste of my time.
DVD Review "THE ASTRONAUT FARMER" Score B+
This is a nice little family friendly movie about holding on to your dreams, never giving up and the true sense of "You can accomplish anything that you want". Billy Bob Thorton stars as Charlie Farmer in this relatively underrated movie about a former military astronaut who left before ever getting to go into space because his father committed suicide, now he is a rancher with a supportive family of a wife, 15 year old son, and two young daughters who as a family are building a space rocket so Charlie can launch himself into orbit around the earth. Of course NASA, the FFA and the government all want to prevent him from doing so. A common man who wants to achieve what seems out of the grasp of normal people. The sacrifices involved are huge for the family and the story is a great example of sticking to your dream. Nice film to watch with your family.
Documentary DVD Review: "FOOD INC." Score B-
As far as documentaries go this one is above the mid line of good ones but doesn't quite reach the point of a great one. I have seen similar documentary style reporting about our Food system, our Food companies, Corn, Slaughterhouses and the like....on cable before. This one does point out facts that the majority of Americans don't have a clue about (although many of these I knew from previous readings, reports and documentaries and shows). If you want to get some education about your food, where it comes from, how its engineered, and where its going you should spend a couple hours watching this one. You may or may not be sickened, change your views of the food you eat or even just accept that this is the way things are. The touch on Organic productions and the fact that the mega conglomerate are buying them up is a promise for the future because they aren't shutting them down they are realizing that are profit making enterprises. Check this doc out.

DVD Review: "THE BREAKUP" Score B-
Jenifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn star in this one about a couple living together who have a messy breakup and even though they still love each other spend the movie pretending the opposite until there condo is sold then its too late. Vaughn co-wrote, co-produced and stars in this film and it seems like the character is very close to who he actually is. Aniston is esp. hot in this one, almost seeing her nude (with only a blurry backside image revealed) is worth seeing. As for the comedy there is the usual Vaughn shtick that on delivery creates an occasional laugh out loud at times. The round out cast is decent but mostly subtle with a little bit of funny here and there from them. This is one relationship movie where we don't get the normal happy go lucky wrap up, and is ultimately unsatisfying in a way.
DVD Review: "JOE DIRT" Score C+
David Spade is funny on occasion. This film however plays like an extended SNL skit (not surprising since it comes from the mind of Spade and producer Adam Sandler) It starts off simple enough and the plot is a simple one of Joe Dirt trying to find his parents who lost/abandoned him on a canyon tour when he was 8 years old and he essentially raised himself. Through a goofy premise of a talk DJ interviewing Joe about his life on the air, the movie unfolds. There are some funny sequences and a few chuckles to be had but overall nothing outstanding in this comedy. Its basically a one note premise about the crazy adventures of a weird redneck hick in search of his parents.

DVD Review: "THE SENTINEL" Score B-
Political thrillers are usually difficult to pull of and this is as well. Michael Douglas is always good in whatever he creates mostly believable characters and as a Secret Service agent at the top of the heap as the "man who saved Reagan" who now is in an affair with the current first lady and the center of a set up assassination plot against the president. Keifer Sutherland as his ex best friend who now hunts Douglas down as he attempts to clear his name. Eva Longoria is completely useless in this as the "newbie" to the Secret Service. There is some nice action but this film mostly plugs along slowly as Douglas uncovers the plot and who is involved. Its a decently done thriller but there are some holes in the writing concerning the Service.

DVD Review; "DON'T SAY A WORD" Score B-
As far as kidnapping thrillers go this one fares pretty well. Michael Douglas is usually good in most of the films he is in, some better than others but overall he is consistent in delivering believable characters that serve the story he is in. In this he is a clinical psychologist asked by a colleague to help out with a teenage girl, the twist is that the girl has a secret and its about the location of a gem that a recently released set of criminals want back. So they kidnap the doctor's daughter to get him to get the information out of the girl. Basically this one runs the standard gamut of kidnap films with the defiant father, protective mother who wants to just call the cops, and the foreign accented villain calling the shots from a phone. The movie does keep you interested throughout most of it and there are the usual moments of "why did he do that!", or "couldn't he have just done xxxx" but thats the norm in films like this. Overall decent a film.
DVD Review: "THE AMATEURS" Score A-
The Amateurs is a wonderful comedy that is brilliantly cast, written, directed and acted. This movie is one of the best uses of voice overs in a film I have seen/heard. Too many people missed this wonderful little independent film with a great cast. A down on his luck man and all of his friends in a small town decide that its time for some change and they all pool their limited budgets and limited talents into making a amateur porn film. Throughout the movie not much works out the way they intended it to be but by the end it all works out and makes you feel good. The lack of intelligence of the characters collectively makes this such a fun piece and produces some real laugh out loud moments in the movie. The first time writer/director actually turns in a brilliant first time movie. I highly suggest you check it out.

DVD Review: "TIMELINE" Score; C-
This expensive time traveling piece is filled with logic flaws, on wormholes, on history tampering, the ignorance of any "butterfly effects" and on and on. Now if you can get past any of these problems this film is virtually destroyed in the beginning by the combination of bad acting and bad direction. Actors step all over each others lines and it seems that there wasn't a script just a scene description. Paul Walker should not be allowed to do anything but Fast and Furious crap, his acting is horrible in this one and he destroys any belief in the story, additionally he is completely mis-cast (as the son of a Scottish Archeologist huh?). The rest of cast is decent enough to get through this story but it quickly becomes just another episode of the cable show Stargate SG-1. The best parts of the movie comes toward the end with the big English v French battle scenes, clearly where most of the money went. The ending becomes too cliche and I think there is a reason that this film is a quiet DVD and not a talked about movie.
DVD Review: "DRAG ME TO HELL" Score B
Sam Rami has redeemed himself. After the debacle that was Spider-man 3 he final has come back with a nice little horror comedy that brings back the flavor of his Evil Dead films and Darkman. His unique flair for mixing comedy and horror is what he should be doing more of. Signature floating dancing demons and covering his leads in goo, blood or swallowing eyeballs all make more appearances in this little film. If you sit back and enjoy this fun romp you don't mind that its mostly predictable but still has a few moments of scares mixed with laughs (along with some gross outs). Allison Loman does an OK job in the lead but overacts a lot and Justin Long is just as useless as he always is, its Lorna Raver who steals the movie with her dead-on cursing/dead gypsy woman. The demon is scary and the film is all around fun (if you like this kind of thing that is). Grabs some popcorn and watch this one ( but be prepared to stop eating at points or getting the vacuum out to clean up the tossed pieces from scared jumps).
DVD Review: "THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON" Score B
Brad Pitt does a great job in this and I am sure that filming this for him is what made him fall in love with New Orleans and ultimately move there and help its recovery. As for the film itself its masterful crafted and with the superb special effects and make up becomes a mostly believable tale (until the ending). The movie unfolds in a tale of a journal being read at a deathbed and the grand love story unfolds as the daughter unwraps the mysteries of who this man was and how his life happened. I won't reveal the tales or happenings but its mostly love story mixed with Forrest Gump like adventures just not as magical or humor filled. Its an Epic but in the realm of a "curious case" rather than a grand adventure. Check it out.
DVD Review: "JARHEAD" Score C
Jarhead is more of a letter of recognition to the unsung soldiers of recent who went to war in Iraq but nothing really happened for them and never really did much but it took its toll on them none the less. There are some nice acting sequences and a couple of visually neat shots (like burning oil fields raining black gold). In the end though I found this one to be rather boring. Well acted but slow moving and seemed like more of a script written by a soldier who was bored off his rocker when he served over there. I know that there was supposed to be a message in this but I think that it was lost on me and perhaps on the majority of audiences that saw or will see this film.
DVD Review: "LAYER CAKE" Score B
English gangster films seem somewhat similar and this one doesn't disappoint. Drug dealing has taken over the crime wave of killing and stealing because its so much more profitable. Daniel Craig's nameless character wants to get out and is forced to do one more deal as his money is being laundered. However his big boss sets him on more than one task in finding a missing girl on top of selling 1 million stolen pills. The owners of the stolen pills wants them back as well as the head of the guy who stole them. As a middle man Craig is caught between it all. Double crosses and killings abound as he tries to just get out of it all. This film is acted well and directed with purpose and in the end its an effective crime film. The ending is a bit on the nose and in viewing the alternate endings shows that their is indeed a better take to how to end it. Intriguing though is how we go through the whole film following Craig's character and through the great writing his name is never revealed (the credits just list him as XXXX). Smart film. Check it if you dig crime drama's with some twists.
DVD Review: "THE ROCKER" Score C-
This one lays a golden goose egg of bad. Rainn Wilson is funny in the office and perfect for that role, in this one he is just plain dumb. This movie is more reminiscent of a SNL skit left on the cutting room floor than a movie. Although the premise is decent enough: An 80's drummer dumped by his band and they go on to super rock band without him, he then 20 years later joins his nephews band and thanks to YouTube they become successful too and he get to be a "Rocker". However the execution and the writing cause this whole thing that sounds promising to fall flat. The jokes are bad, Wilson's improv is lame, the other actors are mostly phoning it in. I half expected a laugh track to be included to add to the bad sitcom-ness feel of this one. Stretched out to a feature length film is what this feels like...stretched out. You can skip this film and wouldn't miss anything.
DVD Review: "TRICK 'R' TREAT" Score B+
Halloween films have another well done movie to add to the roster of films to watch during the season. Sam the mischievous pumpkin-headed demon is the link in the various stories that are presented in this collection of Halloween horrors happening in one small town. From "Always check your candy" to "Don't scare another with a fake recreation of a real horror" to " You can't escape the sins of your past or present" or "Just don't disrespect Halloween at all" Sam will hunt you down and bad things will come your way on All Hallows Eve. This more fun than scary but there are definite jumps and gore to be found abounding in this movie. Sam is a new Halloween Icon and we can expect more films to come from this series. The acting and directing are effectively done in this and fortunately their are no outstandingly bad performances that usually plague films in this genre. I really liked this one and if you search the web at all on this one just about every critic loved this little film too. Effects are great as are the story segments. Enjoy. Check this one out it will be a Treat in your bag of candy for Halloween.
DVD Review: "THE BROTHERS BLOOM" Score B+
Caper and con man films can be fun and this one proves that so. The Brothers Bloom are con men and have been since their first one, which we get to see played out and the final result which is better than we expected. Through their travels around the world they pull off elaborate months long cons when older brother writes the script for younger Bloom's roles. All the time as the movie goes along we are always questioning what is really happening and what is part of the larger cons with cons and who is actually getting conned. The final big sting is on a rich 30ish loner recluse woman who is filled with self taught hobbies and a grand view for adventure which is her downfall in their con on her. Along the way though love happens to creep in and the part becomes more and more immersion for Bloom. This fun romp has a bit of the feel of the Sting along with some Hudson Hawk (I am one of the few who got that movie and thought it wasn't too bad and actually fun). This is a really well written and crafted movie. It is well cast, well acted, and directed. I can hardheartedly recommend this fun film. Enjoy this overlooked movie.
DVD Review: "KNOWING" Score C+
Somehow Nic Cage does a lot of big budget big release movies. Of course anymore that is all he does. Many have him playing the same thing he plays in most of them. The plot for Knowing is this; 50 years ago a young girl wrote out a numbered message put in a school time capsule that is opened today, Cage's young half deaf son gets the message, a drunken Cage deciphers the message and its dates and locations of every major earth disaster where people die except only three dates remain. Cage just happens to live nearby the two that happen next and the last is that the sun is going to be burning the earth killing everyone else. SPOILERS: The message is from Aliens, sent as a warning and only a few who hear their magical whispering will be transported before the end of earth to a new suitable planet to re-start. Cage's son gets to go, he doesn't, there is no saving the earth . It burns. If you didn't figure out that it was Aliens by two thirds into the movie oh well. Its OK just average, effects are nice, some of the storytelling logic is a bit out of place, but just be entertained for what it is a Earth ending disaster movie, where some of our children are saved by Aliens so the human race can go on.
DVD Review: "X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERNE" Score B-
In what Marvel studios intends to be a slate of X-Men Origins films WOLVERINE is out of the gate first. Jackman reprises the role he stamped in the other X-Men films. Here he does nothing new and we have seen all of the emotions and actions he does. Schieber as his brother Sabertooth is an interesting casting choice and although he does a decent job it might have been better on a film franchise basis to use the same actor from the other films. The introduction of other X-Men characters was nice if brief. However Will i Am should stay out of movies as he is not an actor and falls flat around everyone else. Deadpool was under utilized and bastardized for the ending. Hope his spin off movie is better. Action sequences are mediocre and nothing to jump up and down about. The film performed well a the box office mainly due to Wolverine's worldwide popularity and using the same actor for the spinoff as in the previous X-men films. Decent not great.
DVD Review: "SUPERTROOPERS" Score D+
A goofy slapstick esqe reminiscent of Porky's, Police Academy and Revenge of the Nerds type movies. A few funny things in it (very few). Mostly its a dumbed down comedy not even worthy of Dumb and Dumber status. Lacking any real redeeming qualities this one misses on most of the fun it was going for. Its a bad three stooges meets revenge of the nerdy cops. How it got made is beyond me but lots of crap seems to get green lighted in Hollywood-land. Unless you are a 14yr old teenage boy you can probably skip this one or maybe you are into mindless, substance-less and mostly talent starved comedies.

DVD Review; "HITCH" C+
Will Smith and Kevin James in this odd comedy that at first appears to be about James' character but quickly becomes a romantic comedy vehicle for Smith's character (conveniently named "Hitchens" or "Hitch" who just happens to be a secret Love Doctor only known to a few people). James hires him to help him woo his rich lady boss whom he is an accountant for. Smith's Hitch is super smooth and can do no wrong, and he attempt to hook up with a gossip editor who's bid stories are gossip about the rich lady and trying to find the love doctor and out him. Predictable happenings occur with the mis-understandings that are in line with a Three's Company episode (standard writing for this type of movie). With the mostly mediocre writing this one putts along to the inevitable happy ending for everyone involved after the mis-understandings are revealed and cleared up. It manages to slip in a few funny moments here and there but it plays like a feature length sitcom opposed to a feature. As far as romantic comedies go this one is on par with the average ones nothing really special to elevate it above any of the others as it pretty much follows the guideline plot of any of the standard ones that came before it. Its an OK date DVD to rent.
DVD Review; "LORD OF WAR" B-
Nic Cage is mostly Nic Cage again in this film with lots of added voice over stuff in the form of a gun runner's rules. This one gets a B- for the sole fact that its based on true life events and illegal arms trading that took (and takes) place around the world. The sheer amount of weapons in the world is staggering and its really hard to believe that there are this many guns in existence. Disturbing is the traders lack of morals in their sales of weapons that they knew would immediately be used to slaughter thousands of people. The scope of filming a movie like this really covers the social questions of arms trade and the entertaining value of film making for audiences with a tale of one particular gun runner.
DVD Reveiw: "WANTED" Score B-
Saw this in the theaters when it first came out and now on a second viewing I basically give it the same rating on DVD. The movie based on a comic is similar in vein to The Matrix in that the lead starts out with a 'normal life' and eventually discovers that he is "The One" with super powers. The effects in this one are visually stunning and there are some new things that we haven't seen before done in this one, especially stunt driving wise. Angelina Jolie is hot and tough as ever in this and looks great, a great role for her. The training sequences are interesting and the kills are all great. For an action fan this one is decent enough and delivers. The ending leaves little room for a sequel so I don't think we'll see one. Overall a worth while popcorn action flick.
DVD Reveiw: "HIDE AND SEEK" Score C+
The combination of Robert DiNero and Dakota Fanning seemed like a great match up. Where this one starts out very creepy, from the first shot on, the tone and feel of the film making is definitely un-nerving which any thriller should be. There are so many possible options and so many questions that are created through the first two thirds of the movie. Dakota is excellently disturbing and leaves it up to the audience to figure out what is really going on. A few genuine jumps are to be found in the film. However the writing takes a turn for the worse by the beginning of Act three. SPOILER ALERT: What was a creepy well crafted thriller declines into a base seen-it before cookie cutter answer to the riddles presented. The easy twist out is DiNero is crazy and has a split personality, and this quickly explains away all of the creepy happenings the film supplied up until this moment. Now the film still isn't over after this reveal, now it turns into a child endangerment film with crazy hunting after his daughter. This film could have been so much more and its simply the fault of the writing. The daughter could have been crazy and created a alter killer ego, the cave could have harbored an actual killer, the house could have had some ghost, the dead child of the neighbor's could have been Charlie, the neighbor man could have been Charlie, the dead mother's ghost could have been tormenting them. Instead he is crazy and wakes up to realize he did all the killings and bad stuff...lame. Could have been so much more to this, which would have made it a better film.
DVD Review : "BANDITS" Score A-
What seems like and unlikely pair of movie buddies ends up being a great team for this merry odd couple of bank robbers. Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton display some great characters for this really fun crime film. Although Thorton in his own admission states that this character is very close to himself (esp. the fear of antique furniture) This film has lots of genuinely funny moments and was creative enough to make for a great ending NO SPOILERS here. I was actually caught off guard and I think that others who would watch this be just as surprised in a world were most movies are so predictable. The banter btw the two buddies here is worth the watching and I think its a mix of script and improv. The addition of Cate Blanchett to the film just adds to the overall zany-ness. As a fan of bank heist films I really like this one and can recommend it.

DVD Review: "MY SUPER EX GIRLFRIEND" Scoere B-
A new twist on a romantic comedy (as we all know there is usually only one formula for these). I found myself actually enjoying this and due to having no real expectations for it I liked it more than I thought I might. The strange happenings in this are explained in the title of the film so I didn't question much of anything including a CGI in apartment shark attack. Overall its a cute movie, funny and entertaining but not overly serious at all. Simple story and you can pretty much see the ending coming a mile away. This is a lazy day just want to watch a simple movie type film.
DVD Review: "SNAKE EYES" Score C+
So in this Nic Cage is typical Nic Cage throughout this one. It starts off with him being wild, flamboyant, crazy, loud Nic Cage then transforms quickly into Solid in charge top cop Nic Cage after the murder starts and the investigation begins. The setup for a murder mystery is established form the get go and its fun to try to figure it out as it goes along. Gary Sinese has a decent role as well as all of the supporting characters. No spoilers in this review, check it out if you are bored. Its not great but its not bad either.
DVD Review; "CRANK 2" Score B-
This is a grindhouse film, no other way to describe it. Movies made in this fashion are rare indeed. From the moment it starts to the moment it ends you are on a ride. Now there is little plot to be had. They stole his heart and he has to get it back and the replacement in his chest needs to be charged up every once and a while (which also gives him near super powers too). This wild ride confused me at first until I knew what type of film I was getting myself into. Its a blend of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Natural Born Killers, most Guy Richie film and Tarantino ones with a dash of every action film every made. Now with that said its a decent movie for what it is. There will be more than once during this film where you will say "What the Fuck is going on!?" but if you hang in there the ride only gets crazier as it goes on. There are plenty of action scenes along with bloody violence along the way so before you check this one out know that it is not going to be like any other film you have seen.
DVD Review: " MADAGASCAR 2" Score: B+
Now I probably should have viewed the first movie before seeing this one as I know a lot of the re-occurring jokes were lots on me. However I did enjoy this one as there are lots of fun moments throughout. The animation and voice work are top notch and I liked this one. The outstanding one is Sasha Baron Cohen as his character steals just about every scene he has. I think that this is one of the better of the animation films as of late and from what I understand Universal Theme parks are on tap to create attractions based on this popular series and deserves it.
DVD Review "BRINGING OUT THE DEAD" Score; C+
Now although we have a great director in Scorsese and a mostly great cast this film strangely falls apart almost from the beginning. This one is all over the place and in a way reminded me of Natual Born Killers. There are tons of moments of WTF in this. And some of the characters are just outlandish. A funny note is that Scorsese himself is often the voice on the Ambulance dispatch radio. Throughout this movie I kept thinking are most EMT's this fucked up in the head? Is this in anyway a depiction of New York ambulance workers on the Graveyard shift? I really think not, what I think it was is a writer's wacky view of this job and with Scorsese, Cage and the other cast they created a weird oddball movie about it.
DVD Review: "MILK" Score A-
A biographical movie of Harvey Milk the first openly gay politician elected to a major office in San Francisco and then murdered by an associate official. Sean Penn won an Oscar for his portrayal and deservedly so (however I still think that Mickey Rourke was robbed from his Wrestler portrayal). Penn is one of the top actor working and in this he completely engulfed the character and creates a performance worth checking out. There isn't a moment in the film where you doubt Penn's portrayal of Milk. The movie starts in the 1960's and ends at his death. There was really a great look and feel to this movie as they shot many of the scenes in the actual places where the real events took place. Significant as well is the statements of tolerance and how America is still struggling with them as a society today.
DVD Review: "STEALTH" Score: C-
Uh another rogue Artifical Intelligence computer that goes haywire, this time in the form of a Super Jet bombing plane who joins a group of super jet fighters, three hot military types, cast for their looks. This one is filled with lots of CGI action sequences and flying, inter-cut with a obligatory bikini scene for Jessica Biel. The three super jet pilots are told that they are getting a forth member to their team....a super computer operated plane. They are taking their new member out for training and for learning from them. The AI takes it upon itself to go after targets and as they try to stop it one member is killed, then the hot chick crashes in North Korea and is hunted by troops there as she tries to escape. Then the maverick pilot must stop the AI plane from starting a war with Russia and save the hottie from the evil Koreans. This movie is outlandish and far from any reality and was made for 14 year old boys as a quick CGI action film.
DVD Review: "STARDUST" Score B-
This one is in the words of the director Princess Bride meets Midnight Run. And for the most part it is a great movie, there are a few problems with it however. Now I will start off by saying that the young lead does well, and Claire Danes is stunningly beautiful in this and does a great accent and character. She is a falling star and looks like what one would be. Michelle Pfieffer does a great job as the evil witch, and with her sisters brings in some great comic moments as does Ricky Gervais. Now the big glaring mis-cast here is Robert DeNiro. He was only cast because the director wanted desperately to work with him. However he is completely wrong for the part. In a character movie with an old medieval fantasy feel, one of the last actors that you should put in a film like this is DeNiro, he is an incredible actor however not right for this type of film or character: The gay captain of a flying lightning capture air ship. He immediately takes you out of the fantasy as you watch in horror trying to play a pansy. Other than that the film is great, fun, nice storyline and other actors do great, I enjoyed it. I just wish they had put an actor that was better suited for this material than DeNiro. I suspect that DeNiro decided to do this role because he was bored and wanted to play something way off type for him.
DVD Review ; "YOU KILL ME" Score A-
Now at least for me Ben Kingsley can do no wrong. He rocks in every single film he does and he manages to create real distinct characters that live and breathe the dictates of whatever the film is about. I loved him in this even though the movie itself is a bit slow at times. His character and acting made up for that. Its a well written and well acted piece and I enjoyed it. This one as a drunk hit man who screws up and is forced by his boss to go to San Francisco to get into AA and clean up his act. Where he meets a new love interest and through complete honesty fall for each other.
DVD Review: "EAGLE EYE" Score: C+
I don't really see the appeal of Shia Labooooff as the lead of any film. He is the same character in everything. This one sets out to have the "Eagle Eye in the sky" track and control everything in the universe to get Shia's twin brother character to the supercomputer to authorize a government regime termination that his now dead twin has blocked. SPOILER ALERT: Now what started out as a cool premise, an evil secret organization tracking you and making you do stuff to further their cause, helping you along the way quickly fades away in a cop-out when its revealed that its a Super Computer Artificial intelligence behind it all, and the movie becomes a mish-mash rehash of the 80's Matthew Broderick movie WAR GAMES. Overall there are some nice action sequences, but everything is too convenient. One mistake and the whole thing would be over, or if they just decided to go out into the woods away from anything electronic. The addition of the girl was completely unneeded and really made no sense other than to have it be a boy/girl team being chased. Had this been a bit like BOURNE IDENTITY with a evil group (not a single malfunctioning AI computer) this could have been a better film.
DVD Review : "RESIDENT EVIL EXTINCTION" Score C+
This series is derived from the video games and for the most part the movies play like one. The effects are mostly well done as are the action scenes. Usually the problems with these movies always lie in the plot and character actions. Its the whole you want to yell at the screen and tell the idiot characters not to do this or that cause they are gonna get killed...but then again maybe thats the point. The world is infected and everyone is a zombie except for a few. The Umbrella corp is attempting to clone Alice over and over to perfect her powers. Meanwhile the actual Alice is wondering the land alone...until she meets up with the caravan of surviors. What gets a bit out of sorts here is her super powers...they basically render the need for fighting, knives, and guns unnecessary but they fight anyway. Some decent fights with the new super zombies. This film will be about what you can expect from a Resident Evil movie.
DVD Review : "ROLE MODELS" Score B-
I didn't expect much from this one but was pleasantly surprised at how funny a lot of it was. The scene stealer of the entire movie is clearly the little foul mouthed black kid....so funny. Sean William Scott is good but simply reminded me of his American Pie character just all grown up. Most of the film is a standard buddy flick where they fall out about three quarters in only to become best buds again by the end. Standard Plot line. If you check this one out be sure to watch the outtakes and deleted scenes many are funnier than some of the stuff in the movie. Overall its a decent comedy.
